Digital cameras are always changing and constantly improving, but for most people a good quality 5 Megapixel camera provides good enough resolution, especially if the noise level is low. I refuse to follow the Canon and Nikon herd even though those names dominate the market. My favorite camera is the Olympus E-1. It is only 5 megapixels but those pixels are larger than some cameras that claim 10 megapixels and its noise level is very low. I also use a C-5050 which is also 5 megapixels, but it's noise level is much higher. However, this is one of the few cameras that has an F1.8 lens, making it very useful for low light conditions.
I also use an Olympus E-510 and and C-8080. The C-8080 is a prosumer camera with a fixed zoom lens but that lens is terrific for portraits and mid-distance shooting. Many of my foliage shots in 2007 were taken with it. The camera is very slow to save, but when you are doing landscapes, it doesn't really matter. I just love the color it produces.
Olympus makes fantastic lenses which is one of the reasons why I like these cameras so much.
I find the E-1 best for wedding photography and have used it extensively to produce wedding slide shows, musical slide shows and to produce wedding photo books with Apple's Aperture.
